Two suspects remanded in easy payment scheme housing fraud case

The Mirihana Special Crimes Investigation Division has arrested two female suspects linked to a major housing fraud, marking the latest development in an investigation that has already seen the company’s director remanded.

Police said the women, aged 30 and 31, were taken into custody on Thursday (17) for aiding and abetting a private company that defrauded money by promising to build houses under easy payment schemes but failing to deliver. 

They had served as the firm’s chief sales manager and operations officer.

The arrests follow 245 complaints lodged against the company, which allegedly collected large sums from the public without constructing the promised houses. Investigators have also seized four cars belonging to the suspects.

The company’s director was arrested earlier on July 28 and remains in remand custody until September 29. 

The two women were produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday and ordered to be remanded until September 29. (Newswire)
