High risk rain alert issued for 10 districts

The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber advisory for heavy rain in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

The advisory, issued at 7 a.m. on September 21, will remain valid until 7 a.m. on September 22.

According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the affected areas, with heavy rainfall of around 100 mm likely at some locations.

The department has urged residents in the affected areas to remain prepared as heavy rainfall continues.

Rainfall recorded between 8:30 a.m. on September 20 and 7 a.m. on September 21 shows that Maliboda in the Kegalle district received 104 mm, the highest among the locations listed in the advisory.

Kalupahana in Kegalle recorded 95.5 mm, followed by Maskeliya in Nuwara Eliya with 85.5 mm, Polpithigama in Kurunegala with 85 mm and Dammulla in Ratnapura with 82.5 mm.

Meanwhile, the department’s general weather forecast indicates that rainy conditions in southwestern Sri Lanka are expected to continue due to wind flow towards a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal near the Andaman region. The system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka.
