Sri Lanka targets US$5 billion in digital exports as PM calls for long-term tech partnerships

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says Sri Lanka is seeking long-term technology partnerships that strengthen the country’s capabilities, knowledge base and human capital, rather than focusing solely on attracting investment.

Speaking at the grand finale of the Global CIO Forum in Colombo on September 23, the Prime Minister said digital transformation was an integral part of Sri Lanka’s wider economic and social transformation.

She said the government has placed digital transformation at the centre of efforts to build a more productive, connected and inclusive economy, with a target of developing US$5 billion in digital exports.

“Our objective is not simply to attract investment, but to develop long-term partnerships that contribute to Sri Lanka’s technological capabilities, knowledge base and human capital while creating opportunities for investors,” Amarasuriya said.

The Prime Minister said technological development must have a clear public purpose by improving lives, expanding access to opportunities, strengthening public services and supporting economic participation.

She also stressed the need to address the digital divide, saying access to devices, connectivity, digital skills and services should not depend on a person’s location, income, language or gender.

Amarasuriya said particular attention must be given to ensuring women and girls have access to digital technology and skills and can participate fully in the digital economy, including in the creation, use and governance of technology.

The World CIO 200 forum, held in Colombo from September 22 to 24, brings together international technology leaders for discussions covering artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital public infrastructure, cloud technologies, sustainable innovation and digital leadership.

Minister of Science and Technology and Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, members of the diplomatic community, chief information officers and other technology industry representatives attended the event.
