Sri Lankan Muslim MPs write to Saudi King seeking clemency for Anujan

Muslim parliamentarians from across Sri Lanka’s political divide have come together to appeal to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for royal clemency and compassionate consideration for Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anujan, who is facing imprisonment and a substantial financial penalty in the Kingdom.

In a letter dated September 21, 2026 signed by Muslim parliamentarians from different political parties including Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih requested relief, sentence reduction, or remission of the financial fine imposed on Anujan.

They highlighted that the fine is far beyond his financial capacity as a worker of limited means whose family in Sri Lanka relies heavily on his earnings.

The appeal emphasized that Anujan has expressed regret and remorse following the incident for which he was convicted, extending an apology and conveying respect towards Prophet Muhammed and the religious sentiments of Muslims.

While emphasizing their full respect for Saudi Arabia’s legal authority, sovereignty and judicial institutions, the parliamentarians framed the appeal on purely humanitarian grounds, citing the long standing bilateral relations and goodwill between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. (Newswire)
