Sri Lanka told to prepare for possible floods in October and November

Sri Lanka could experience increased rainfall during October and November, with authorities potentially needing to prepare for flood conditions, an official from the Department of Meteorology said.

The official said current forecasts indicate an increase in rainfall during the two months, noting that October and November are generally periods when Sri Lanka experiences flood conditions, particularly with increased activity in the Bay of Bengal.

Depending on the intensity of rainfall, preparations may be required for possible flooding, the official said.

Meanwhile, wetter conditions are expected over the next few days, particularly in southwestern parts of the country.

The official said afternoon thunderstorms could also begin developing from around Sept. 28-29 and into October in areas that have recently experienced relatively dry weather.

For the immediate forecast, rain is expected at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Sea conditions are also expected to become rough in some areas, while waves could reach heights of around two to three metres in certain coastal waters. Coastal communities and fishing and naval communities have been advised to remain vigilant. (Newswire)
