Severe lightning advisory issued for several parts of Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber advisory for severe lightning for the Uva and Eastern provinces and the Mannar, Mullaitivu, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts.

The advisory is valid until 11:30 p.m. on September 27.

The department said thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several locations in the affected areas, while temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms.

People have been advised to seek shelter indoors, avoid open areas and open water bodies, refrain from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances, and avoid travelling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats during thunderstorms.

The public has also been warned to be alert to fallen trees and power lines.
