Ministry warns against using children’s photos and videos for Facebook monetisation

The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has urged parents and guardians to exercise greater caution when sharing photographs and videos of children on social media, warning that such content could expose children to serious safety and privacy risks.

In a statement, the Ministry said the growing monetization of content on platforms such as Facebook has contributed to a rapid increase in photographs and videos of children being uploaded online, both with and without parental consent.

The Ministry said individuals and organisations have also been found using videos of children for commercial purposes, often presented as content showcasing their talents or everyday activities.

It warned that videos and vlogs revealing details about a child’s daily routine and lifestyle could expose personal information to outsiders and place their safety at risk.

The Ministry also raised concerns over developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), warning that photographs and videos of children available online could potentially be misused to generate obscene or sexually explicit fabricated content.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry called on parents, guardians and others responsible for the care and protection of children to act responsibly and remain vigilant when posting or allowing content involving children to be shared on social media. (Newswire)
