Ranil’s misuse of state funds case to be taken up today

The case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe over the alleged misuse of public funds during a visit to London is scheduled to be taken up again before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (30).

The matter is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The case stems from allegations over the misuse of approximately Rs. 16.9 million in public funds in connection with Wickremesinghe’s attendance at his wife’s graduation ceremony in London during an official overseas visit in late 2023.

The London trip formed part of a broader visit to the United States and the United Kingdom and was reportedly undertaken with a government-funded delegation.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the CID on August 22, 2025, and remanded until August 26, becoming the first former Sri Lankan head of state to be placed in remand custody.

He was subsequently released on three personal bail bonds of Rs. 5 million each, following the submission of medical reports. (Newswire)
