Rs. 7.7 Bn Anuradhapura Sacred City Development Plan submitted to India for financial assistance

A draft proposal for the Anuradhapura Sacred City Development Plan, initially estimated to cost Rs. 7.7 billion, has been submitted to the High Commission of India, with the Indian Government expected to provide financial assistance for the project.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the proposal was jointly prepared by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and the Department of National Physical Planning, with the project expected to commence before the end of 2026.
A discussion on the draft proposal was held yesterday (30) at the Presidential Secretariat, led by Chief of Presidential Staff Prabath Chandrakeerthi and Acting Deputy High Commissioner/First Secretary of the High Commission of India Roshini Thomson.
The proposed development initiative follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agreement to extend assistance towards the development of the Anuradhapura Sacred City during his official visit to Sri Lanka, when he visited the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
Accordingly, the UDA and the Department of National Physical Planning have proposed jointly implementing a series of development activities aimed at improving infrastructure and facilities within the Sacred City.
The project will focus on preserving the historical and religious significance of Anuradhapura while addressing existing infrastructure requirements.
Planned development activities include the renovation of access roads, improvements to waste disposal and sanitation facilities, and the restoration of dilapidated sites within the Sacred City.
Meanwhile, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently held discussions with the Maha Sangha and relevant stakeholders regarding the proposed development plan and instructed officials to expedite its implementation. (Newswire)
