Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, Naoaki Kamoshida, participated in a signing ceremony today for the “Rooftop Solar Aggregation and Virtual Net Metering Project,” marking the first-ever initiative in Sri Lanka under the Japan Fund for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JFJCM) framework.
The project, supported by a USD 5.5 million grant from the JFJCM established at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with backing from the Government of Japan aims to accelerate Sri Lanka’s clean energy transition. Key components include the deployment of high efficiency High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) distribution lines across approximately 140 kilometres between Negombo and Galle to upgrade traditional infrastructure, reducing technical energy losses by up to 30%.
Additionally, the initiative will introduce Sri Lanka’s first distribution grid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 6MWh capacity, designed to store excess daytime solar power and dispatch it during peak evening demand. Reaffirming Japan’s commitment as a long term partner, the project combines advanced low carbon technologies with international cooperation to support Sri Lanka’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
