Sri Lanka to build 10 modern chemical-free fruit-ripening chambers this year

The Institute of Post Harvest Technology Management has announced plans to construct 10 modern fruit-ripening chambers within this year and make them available to large-scale fruit producers, as part of efforts to promote safer fruit-ripening practices in Sri Lanka.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, the initiative aims to encourage the use of modern, scientifically recognised fruit-ripening methods without relying on harmful chemical substances.
Chairman of the Institute of Post Harvest Technology Management, Professor Rohitha Prashantha, stated that commercial businesses will also be provided with the necessary technology and training to adopt modern fruit-ripening practices.
He explained that the proposed facilities will move beyond traditional ripening chambers by introducing natural and scientific methods designed to ensure the availability of safe, high-quality fruits in the local market.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort to establish a systematic programme for improving fruit safety and reducing the health risks associated with the use of harmful chemicals in artificial fruit ripening.
Meanwhile, the national programme titled “Poison-Free Fruits for Children” was launched on Thursday (01), coinciding with World Children’s Day, under the patronage of Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe.
The programme, launched at the Ministry Auditorium, seeks to protect public health, particularly that of children, by discouraging harmful chemical-based fruit-ripening practices and improving consumer access to fruits of higher quality and safety standards. (Newswire)
