
A 51-year-old Sri Lankan businessman has been fined Rs. 3.7 million after attempting to illegally bring nearly one kilogram of jewellery into the country through the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The passenger, a resident of Pallekele, Kandy, had arrived at BIA from Dubai on October 3.
Authorities found 996 grams of jewellery concealed on his body in four packages. The jewellery was valued at approximately Rs. 36.5 million.
The passenger and the seized jewellery were subsequently handed over to Customs officers at BIA for further investigation.
Following a formal Customs inquiry that continued until the early hours of October 4, authorities ordered the confiscation of the jewellery and imposed a fine of Rs. 3.7 million on the passenger. (Newswire)
