An express train travelling from Peradeniya to Colombo Fort derailed early this morning (05) after striking earth and rocks that had fallen onto the railway track.
The incident occurred at around 4.40 a.m. between the Gangoda and Kadigamuwa railway stations, causing delays to train services along the Up-country railway line.
The derailment also caused damage to the front section of the train.
The train was reportedly the first office train to operate from Peradeniya to Colombo Fort following the restoration of the Up-country railway line, which had been damaged by Cyclone Ditwah.
According to reports, the train driver said they spotted the mound of earth across the railway track when the train was less than 10 metres away.
“A mound of earth had fallen across the track. When we were approaching, we were not even 10 metres away when we saw it. The train hit the mound and was thrown off the track. After that impact, it struck a rock and was damaged,” he said. (Newswire)
