Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa has filed an anticipatory bail application before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, citing the possibility of being arrested at the airport when she returns to Sri Lanka from overseas.

Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, filed the application today (05), requesting that she be released on bail under any conditions in the event of her arrest.

The application was taken up before Maligakanda Magistrate Janani Perera.

Filed through Attorney-at-Law Jayabalan, the application names the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as the respondent and Shiranthi Rajapaksa as the petitioner.

The application comes against the backdrop of Rajapaksa having been notified to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) to provide a statement.

Rajapaksa is currently overseas, where she has travelled to receive medical treatment.

She left Sri Lanka for Singapore early on September 16, departing from the Bandaranaike International Airport after having been admitted to a private hospital in Colombo due to illness the previous day.

At the time of her departure, police had reportedly notified Rajapaksa to appear before the FCID on September 24.

The FCID subsequently stated that Rajapaksa had travelled overseas despite having been summoned to appear before the Division.

However, a member of the Rajapaksa family later denied reports that former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka despite having previously been summoned by the FCID.

They said that she had not received any summons from the FCID before arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport, adding that the summons was received only after Rajapaksa had arrived at the airport and was preparing to leave Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
