The Department of Census and Statistics has commenced islandwide enumeration for the Economic Census 2025/26 covering agricultural activities, with the exercise scheduled to continue until December 15.

Director General of the Department of Census and Statistics K.M.D.S.D. Karunaratne urged the public to provide accurate information to census officers visiting homes and institutions, stressing the importance of public cooperation for the national exercise.

Speaking at a media briefing held today (07), Karunaratne said the census is aimed at establishing an accurate and updated database on the current status, structure and future development needs of Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector.

The enumeration commenced on October 1 and will continue islandwide until December 15, 2026, under the technical guidance of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Unlike previous exercises using traditional printed questionnaires, officials will collect data using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) technology and tablet computers.

The census will gather information on farmers and farmer groups, land and cultivated areas, agricultural inputs, livestock and agricultural infrastructure.

The Department said the exercise is expected to create a comprehensive and reliable database to support future planning and development of the country’s agricultural sector.

The census will particularly collect updated agricultural data covering the Maha season and the 2026 Yala season. (Newswire)
