Sri Lanka Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva has decided to step down from the captaincy with immediate effect, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced.
In a letter addressed to the national Selection Committee, de Silva said he believes it is time for the next generation to take over the leadership of the Test team.
“It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation,” de Silva said.
Despite relinquishing the captaincy, de Silva confirmed that he remains available to represent Sri Lanka as a player.
Sri Lanka Cricket thanked the all-rounder for his leadership and wished him success in the remainder of his international career.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes him the very best for the remainder of his career and thanks him for the leadership he provided to our Test team,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said.
The cricket board also welcomed de Silva’s continued availability for national selection.
Sri Lanka Cricket has yet to announce his successor as Test captain. (Newswire)
