Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the proposed amendments to the Anti-Corruption Act aim to strengthen its implementation by addressing practical, institutional and human resource challenges.

Speaking during the parliamentary debate on the Anti-Corruption (Amendment) Bill on Oct. 8, she said the changes would facilitate recruitment, resolve inconsistencies between the Sinhala and English versions of the law, and address implementation difficulties.

Amarasuriya said the amendments would also strengthen mechanisms to recover losses incurred by the state through corruption. She rejected claims that the changes would weaken anti-corruption efforts, adding that elected representatives had not been exempted from asset and liability declaration requirements.

She accused the Opposition of misleading the public and attempting to protect a corrupt political culture, saying the government remained committed to fighting corruption and recovering misappropriated public funds. (Newswire)
