Investigations underway into hate speech spread through fake social media accounts

Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament on Friday (Oct. 9) that investigations are underway into individuals spreading hate speech through fake social media accounts.
The Minister said the Computer Crime Investigation Divisions were conducting inquiries into several incidents involving the circulation of hate speech targeting different communities.
He revealed that investigations had identified individuals both in Sri Lanka and overseas who were allegedly using fake accounts to spread hateful content.
However, the Minister said investigations had so far found no evidence of an organised group specifically targeting a particular community.
Wijepala added that authorities had given special attention to several incidents and had already submitted relevant information to the courts as part of ongoing investigations. (Newswire)
