The Ministry of Environment has initiated steps to establish a national mechanism for the proper management of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), bringing together government institutions, private sector organisations and regulatory authorities.
A discussion in this regard was held today (12) at the Ministry of Environment under the patronage of Deputy Minister Anton Jayakody, ahead of International E-Waste Day on October 14.
According to the Ministry, the initiative aims to strengthen Sri Lanka’s electronic waste management system through improved collection, reuse and scientific recycling methods, while supporting the government’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
As part of the programme, steps are being taken to introduce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) provisions under the National Environmental Act, alongside a National Policy on Electrical and Electronic Waste Management, which is expected to receive approval soon.
Meanwhile, the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), in collaboration with Dialog Axiata, has already launched an islandwide electronic waste collection programme.
The initiative enables individuals and institutions to safely dispose of unwanted electrical and electronic equipment through communication service centres and designated collection points across the country.
The Ministry stated that several government institutions, including those responsible for public administration, industries, trade, health, digital economy and local government, will work together to implement the national programme.
Regulatory authorities, including the CEA, Sri Lanka Customs, the Department of Import and Export Control and the Consumer Affairs Authority, will also be involved in strengthening waste collection and segregation at the community level.
The initiative is expected to bring together importers, manufacturers, distributors, telecommunications companies, repair service providers and registered recyclers to promote innovative and environmentally responsible recycling practices. (Newswire)
