The government has decided to provide a Rs. 6,000 school stationery allowance to 1.5 million schoolchildren for the 2027 academic year, under the school stationery assistance programme introduced in 2025.

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted its concurrence to the proposal following a briefing by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Finance.

According to the Cabinet decision, one million schoolchildren from families enrolled in the Aswesuma welfare programme will receive the Rs. 6,000 allowance through direct transfers to their bank accounts.

Meanwhile, another 500,000 schoolchildren identified by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education will receive vouchers worth Rs. 6,000 each to purchase school stationery.

The school stationery allowance programme has been implemented since 2025 as a measure to support students with their educational requirements.

The President informed the Cabinet that the necessary steps would be taken to continue the programme in 2027, covering a total of 1.5 million schoolchildren through direct financial assistance and vouchers. (Newswire)
