The Government of Japan has agreed to provide a grant of approximately Rs. 4.56 billion to Sri Lanka to upgrade a pumping station in the Kelani River Basin, aimed at reducing flood risks in the Wattala and Peliyagoda areas.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, to obtain the grant assistance for the project.

According to the Cabinet decision, the proposed pumping station upgrading project is expected to minimise flood risks in the Mudun Ela sub-basin, which covers the Wattala and Peliyagoda areas.

The project will be implemented with financial assistance from the Government of Japan.

Accordingly, Cabinet approval has been granted to sign the Exchange of Notes with the Japanese Government to obtain the proposed grant.

Approval has also been granted to enter into a grant agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the implementation of the project. (Newswire)
