A fine of LKR 240,000 was imposed by the Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court in a case filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) against a fancy shop in Bandarawela and a home appliances shop in Nittambuwa for violating mandatory product standards and consumer protection regulations.

Badulla District CAA investigation officers uncovered the violations during a raid on September 24, 2026, where locally manufactured 1.2-litre reusable plastic drinking bottles were being sold for LKR 295 each without the required SLS 1616 certification mark.

While the retailer faced charges for offering the uncertified bottles for sale, the manufacturing company was charged for producing and distributing them in breach of standards. Additional charges against the retailer included offering uncertified electrical extension cords for sale and failing to charge for shopping bags as required by the applicable regulation outlined in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2492/29 dated June 10, 2026.

The defendants pleaded guilty before the court on October 7, 2026, resulting in the judicial fine. Authorities have urged consumers to verify SLS certification marks, electrical ratings, and safety standards on everyday items like reusable bottles and extension cords, while reminding traders of their legal obligations.
