Sri Lanka Police have warned that legal action will be taken against individuals spreading false and unverified information on social media, particularly content that causes public unrest, misleads the public or spreads fear.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday (13), Police Spokesman ASP F. U. Wootler said incidents involving the circulation of false information on social media are being reported frequently.

He noted that such posts have often been found to create unnecessary public unrest, mislead people and spread fear among the public.

The Police Spokesman said Sri Lanka Police are closely monitoring such activities and urged the public to refrain from sharing false or unverified information on social media platforms.

He further warned that all necessary steps would be taken to bring those responsible for such offences before the law under the Computer Crimes Act and the Sri Lankan Penal Code. (Newswire)
