Sri Lanka has won the Visitors’ Choice Award for Leading Wellness Destination at the 10th South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2026, held in Malé, Maldives, on October 8.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, M. Rizvi Hassen, received the award at the ceremony, which brought together tourism and hospitality industry representatives from across South Asia.

According to the Sri Lankan High Commission in the Maldives, the recognition highlights the country’s rich heritage of Ayurveda and traditional healing practices, along with its diverse natural landscapes and wellness tourism experiences that continue to attract international visitors.

The South Asian Travel Awards recognise excellence in the tourism and hospitality sectors across six countries: Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

The awards cover several categories, including hotels, resorts, travel agencies, tour operators, airlines and other tourism-related organisations.

This year’s awards attracted more than two million online votes, alongside evaluations conducted by a multinational panel of judges across seven cities.

The 2026 ceremony was held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé in the Maldives, marking the 10th edition of the regional awards programme.

Established in 2016, SATA has become a regional platform recognising achievements and excellence in South Asia’s travel, tourism and hospitality industries. (Newswire)
