Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has stated that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will make the appropriate decision at the right time regarding calls for a presidential pardon for Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.

Responding to questions from journalists on whether the government would consider granting a presidential pardon to Gnanasara Thera, the Prime Minister said the matter was connected to court proceedings and that the judiciary had already delivered its decision.

She noted that any further action would have to be based on advice from the judiciary.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the President’s ability to make appropriate decisions, stating that he has consistently demonstrated sound judgment while considering the prevailing situation in the country.

She further stated that the President respects the judiciary, the country’s culture and the Constitution, adding that these principles have guided his previous decisions and would continue to guide his future actions.

The Prime Minister made the statement in response to questions concerning a protest march launched by Buddhist monks from Kandy, initially opposing the requirement for Gnanasara Thera to wear prison attire, which has since shifted towards demanding a presidential pardon.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya made these remarks following her visits to the Malwathu Maha Viharaya and Asgiri Maha Viharaya in Kandy yesterday (15), where she met the Mahanayake and Anunayake Theras of the two Chapters and presented the revised National Curriculum Framework issued by the National Institute of Education under the government’s new education reforms.
