Galle Hospital stages mock radiation disaster to test emergency preparedness

A special emergency response drill was conducted at the Galle National Hospital to assess the hospital’s preparedness to handle a potential radioactive material leak.
The exercise, reported to have taken place on October 17, simulated a road accident involving a lorry transporting radioactive material and a passenger bus.
During the drill, emergency response teams practised safely transporting radiation-contaminated patients from the simulated accident site to the hospital.
The exercise also included decontamination procedures and the provision of emergency medical treatment to affected patients.
The drill was organised to strengthen coordination among emergency response teams and improve preparedness to handle potential radiation-related emergencies.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff, along with officers of the Galle Police and members of the Tri-Forces, participated in the exercise. (Newswire)
