Five more suspects have been arrested during a joint operation conducted by wildlife authorities and Police in connection with the shooting of the late Sri Lankan Tusker ‘Kavantissa’.
According to the Government Information Department, the arrests were made during a special search operation carried out by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force and Police.
Investigations have revealed that the main suspect who was initially arrested in connection with the incident has been identified as being directly involved in the shooting of the elephant.
Meanwhile, the five newly arrested suspects are believed to be linked to other illegal activities carried out in the area.
Wildlife officials and Galgamuwa Police are currently questioning the suspects as part of ongoing investigations.
Authorities have also expanded investigations to identify the firearms used in the shooting and determine whether an organised illegal wildlife trafficking network had been operating in the area. (Newswire)
