A Sri Lankan woman has given birth to a baby boy aboard a Jazeera Airways flight travelling from Kuwait to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake early today (19).

The woman, a 30-year-old resident of Trincomalee, had travelled to Kuwait in 2024 for employment as a domestic worker.

According to reports, she experienced labour pains while travelling aboard Jazeera Airways flight J9-551, which departed from Kuwait City Airport at 2.52 a.m. today.

The woman subsequently gave birth to a baby boy mid-flight with the assistance of flight attendants, reportedly without any complications.

It is also reported that the woman had allegedly concealed her pregnancy from airline officials by wearing tight-fitting denim trousers, as women nearing childbirth are generally subject to air travel restrictions.

Following the delivery, the pilot informed authorities at Bandaranaike International Airport, enabling arrangements to be made for emergency medical assistance upon landing.

A medical team, including doctors, nurses and ambulance personnel, was stationed near the aircraft to attend to the mother and newborn immediately after arrival.

The mother and baby were subsequently transferred to the Negombo General Hospital for further medical care.

According to hospital sources, both the mother and newborn are in good health. (Newswire)
