Eight spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have been opened, releasing water into the Deduru Oya at a rate of 16,500 cubic feet per second, according to the Irrigation Department.
The Department said two additional spill gates were opened due to the significant rainfall experienced in the upper and middle areas of the Deduru Oya basin, bringing the total number of open spill gates to eight.
As a result, water levels in the Deduru Oya have risen close to flood level, prompting authorities to issue a warning for several low-lying areas.
The Irrigation Department warned of a possible flood situation in low-lying areas along the river valley within the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa and Rasnayakapura.
The Department further warned that the volume of water released from the reservoir could increase depending on the amount of water flowing into it.
Residents living in areas downstream of the reservoir and motorists travelling along roads in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant due to the potential flood risk.
Disaster management authorities have also been requested to take the necessary precautionary measures.
Meanwhile, eight spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have also been opened, releasing water into the Kala Oya at a rate of 7,884 cubic feet per second, according to the Irrigation Department. (Newswire)
