The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has emphasised that registration is mandatory for motorcycles with engine capacities of 48cc or below 50cc, warning that legal action could be taken against those operating unregistered motorcycles on public roads.

Addressing a press conference today (22), Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, retired Air Marshal Thushara Fernando, clarified that motorcycles in this category must be registered despite claims suggesting otherwise.

He pointed out that certain motorcycle dealers have been informing customers that motorcycles with engine capacities below 50cc do not require registration.

The Commissioner General urged consumers to be cautious when purchasing such motorcycles and to ensure that they are provided with the necessary customs documentation.

He further warned that individuals found riding unregistered motorcycles on public roads could face legal action by the Police, including the imposition of fines. (Newswire)
