An 18-year-old girl who had been working as a cashier in a small supermarket at Dharga Town, Aluthgama was taken into custody by the Aluthgama Police after the owner had lodged a complaint that Rs. 1.2 million had been robbed by her.
The Officer-In-Charge of the Aluthgama Police Station said that the shop owner had two sales outlets at Dharga Town and Aluthgama and that this theft had taken place at the Dharga Town shop. Accordingly, the cashier, a resident of Dharga Town itself had been taken into custody and subsequently had confessed during investigations that she had stolen the money.
The cashier had carried out this theft monthly and had admitted to the fact that she had stolen around Rs.700,000 from time to time.
Police discovered that the suspect had taken money from the income earned daily through the sale of goods and deposited it in a personal bank account. The suspect who was taken into custody on the charge of defrauding and stealing money and breach of trust was due to have been produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court on November 6. Officers of the Crimes Division of the Aluthgama Police are carrying out investigations into the theft on the instructions of Assistant Superintendent of Police Duminda Rajapaksa and OIC of the Aluthgama Police Nalaka Magederagama.
