Russian arrested after PC dies in car crash

A police constable who was travelling on a bicycle has died after being hit by a car driven by a Russian national. 

The accident happened on December 13 at around 8.30 pm at Weligama on the Galle-Matara main road. The police constable who was seriously injured in the accident died day before

yesterday (14) while receiving treatment in the hospital. Police Constable Ranjith (56) who was attached to the Habaraduwa Police Station and who was a resident of Weligama, Maha Veediya,

was the victim of the accident.

Kulisho V. Igor a 59-year-old Russian has been arrested on suspicion. Investigations have revealed that this Russian has been staying in this country for some time. Police said that he

resides in Abhimanagama, Kumbalgama.

Police said that the Russian was arrested day before yesterday in connection with a motor vehicle accident and released on bail after being presented to the court but, since the victim, the

police constable had died yesterday (15), he had been arrested again.
