The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is ready for an election at any given time, SLPP MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena said, while refuting the Opposition’s claims that the Government was trying to postpone the Local Government Elections.
Speaking at the SLPP press conference on Saturday, the MP said that the SLPP has already called for applications for candidates and is ready for an election on any date the Election Commission announces.
“We have made three consecutive victories at elections, and our party will go forward despite the criticisms coming on its way. Our grassroots level network is strong. However, an election is not the priority of the people now. They are more concerned with how to face the economic crisis. People have faced hardships as the Cost of Living has spiraled. An Opposition party says that they want a Parliamentary Election, and not the Local Government Elections. That is because they cannot win at least a single Pradeshiya Sabha. Usually, according to the law, Parliamentary Elections and Presidential Elections are held after 5 years,” he commented.
The MP said the SLPP has requested the President and the Power and Energy Minister not to increase the Electricity tariffs again, but to find other avenues to increase revenue. “As a Party, we are not in agreement to increase the electricity bills when the people are facing many hardships,” he added.
