A new constitution is needed for a corruption-free country – Roshan
The country is unable to afford the cost of elections, let alone maintain the provincial councils separately. Just imagine how many universities we could have built with the budget spent on elections since 1980, stated Presidential Candidate Roshan Ranasinghe.
He made these remarks while addressing the presentation ceremony of the draft of a new constitution prepared by former Chief Justice and President’s Counsel Sarath N. Silva, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
Ranasinghe stressed the need to re-evaluate the current Constitution which has been amended 22 times since its introduction in 1978, leading to corruption and misuse of government funds.
He further emphasised the importance of building a nation that is accountable to its people, protects their sovereignty, eliminates corruption and fraud, and reduces the frequency of elections.
Ranasinghe proposed a system where only two elections are held every five years instead of four elections.
He also highlighted the significance of enacting constitutional and economic amendments that reflect the will of the people and prioritise indigenous interests.
He invited people to vote for him to help build such a country.
