About Rs 1 Bn expended towards Digitising the Postal Department

Under the sponsorship of the Universal Postal Union Fund, Computers, UPS, Barcode readers and Printers were distributed to Post Offices (PO), at a ceremony held yesterday (5) at the at the Ministry of Mass Media Auditorium, under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana, with State Minister of Mass Media Shanta Bandara in attendance,.

The Mass Media Minister said that, this is another step towards strengthening the economy, under the existing economic situation.

Under this programme, these technical equipments are to be provided to 653 POs, 300 sub-POs, 27 mail sorting centers and 20 central mail exchanges, islandwide.

About Rs 1 billion has been utilised for this programme, which is being implemented with the aim of digitising POs.

State Minister of Mass Media Shanta Bandara , said that, despite the history of the Postal Department as a loss-making institution under the government, efforts are being made to maintain the Department, so as not to it being a burden on the Treasury by 2024, but a profitable institution by 2024.

Postmaster General S.R.W.M.R.P. Sathkumara, Deputy Postmaster General D.A.R.K Rajasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media, Anusha Palpita and officials from POs attended this event.
