Huge waste dumps heaped up all around within Galle Fishery Harbour have posed severe negative environmental impacts, Galle Fishery industrialists said.
Hazardous waste of the boating industry has caused this situation. There is no proper scientific system of disposing this harmful waste, the industrialists further claimed.
Commenting on the issue, Galle Fishery Harbour Manager Chathuranga Adikaram said that the Galle Municipal Council collects only sorted out recyclable waste for disposal.
“We are short of required labour for waste sorting activities. We seek the assistance of the authorities to solve this problem of waste disposal,” he said.
Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic and Ocean Resources Rathna Gammage assured that the issue will be soon attended to under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative.
