The All- Island Fireworks Manufacturers Association (AIFMA) is expected to improve firework sales during the forthcoming December and January festive seasons.
Dinesh Fernando
AIFMA Chairman Dinesh Fernando told the Daily News that over 100,000 people all over the country are engaged in the fire cracker manufacturing industry and the production could be further increased if people celebrate both forthcoming X’mas and the New Year festivals on a grand-scale.
“The arrival of large number of foreign tourists to Sri Lanka, especially from European countries and organising various firework displays by countrywide tourist hotels and guest houses during this season will also encourage us to increase our productions,” he said.
Fernando said as everybody knows fire crackers and other firework products are mostly sold only during main festive seasons such as New Year, Christmas, Deepavali and Ramazan.
He also said many countries hold annual firework display festivals and it is time our country too should conduct such festivals at least under the state patronage in order to attract foreign and local tourists. The AIFMA chairman also focused attention towards misusing chemicals that are issued to persons who are not registered with the Firecracker Manufacturing Association and such a situation will help unauthorised persons to use chemicals for many other illegal purposes.
Fernando also said over 180 registered firework manufacturers are currently engaged the industry in Kimbulapitiya fireworks manufacturing village as well as in Kandy, Galle and Kurunegala districts.
He said the new Government should focus attention towards the development of the industry and make a price reduction on imported chemicals that are used to manufacture fire crackers.
