Sri Lanka’s air quality remained mostly at moderate levels across major cities over the past 24 hours, with forecasts indicating a possible deterioration in some areas in the coming days, according to the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).
In its ambient air quality update issued on Jan. 27, the NBRO said particulate matter (PM2.5) levels were moderate in most urban centres, while good air quality was recorded in Vavuniya, Nuwara Eliya, Embilipitiya, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa and Monaragala.
However, forecasts for the next 24 hours indicate that air quality could range between moderate and slightly unhealthy levels in several cities, including Jaffna and Puttalam. The agency warned that polluted winds from the northern region under transboundary conditions could push air quality to slightly unhealthy levels across the country for the next two to three days.
The NBRO advised the public to wear face masks when possible and urged sensitive individuals to seek medical advice if they experience breathing difficulties.
Air quality is measured using the Sri Lanka Air Quality Index, which classifies levels from good to hazardous based on particulate matter concentrations. (Newswire)
