Chief of Police of the Peel Regional Police in Canada, Nishan Duraiappah said that he is extremely happy as a person of Sri Lankan origin to witness the development of Sri Lanka.
He said this while participating in a press conference held yesterday (29) after meeting Acting Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon.
Nishan Duraiappah is a grandson of Alfred Duraiappah who was killed when he was Mayor of Jaffna. He has come to Sri Lanka for a visit and met the Acting Inspector General of Police yesterday (29).
He was brought to the Police Headquarters in a horse-drawn procession amid police salutes. A reception was also held for him at the Police Headquarters.
Duraiappah said that he left the country with his parents in 1974 when he was a nine-month-old child and returned in 2003 and it is a matter of happiness that Sri Lanka has achieved great development in the past 20 years. “I was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I am very happy to be a Sri Lankan. I was nine months old when my parents and I moved to Canada.
There were about 70 families there. Today, a large number of Sri Lankan families are residing there. A large number of people have obtained citizenship.
Professionals from various fields of education are working in big positions there,” he said.
“Sri Lanka has achieved a lot of development compared to that time. Roads are developed. Like the tourism industry, other industries have developed. I saw a large group of tourists coming to this country,” he said.
