All citizens must collectively support “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative – Prelate
The “Clean Sri Lanka” programme is a significant initiative for the future of the country, and all citizens must contribute their support, the Deputy Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Wendaruwe Upali Thera said.
He emphasised that national development requires the collective effort of not just the country’s leaders but all its citizens. Commenting on the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, the Thera reflected on the nation’s history, marking 77 years since
Independence and highlighted the numerous challenges faced, including a 30-year war, natural disasters such as tsunamis and landslides, and issues like corruption, crime, and environmental degradation.
“The mindset of our youth has shifted towards leaving the country rather than building a future here. In terms of corruption and crime, Sri Lanka ranks 91st among 184 countries. Can such issues exist in a country guided by the teachings of Buddhism? While laws and punishments are implemented to curb crimes and corruption, these problems cannot be eradicated solely through legal means. The mindset and values of the people must also be uplifted,” he explained.
The Thera observed that during the 1960s and 70s, waste management was not a significant concern because people lived simpler lives, which prevented the creation of large garbage dumps. However, with the advent of the open economy, both necessary and unnecessary elements entered the country, leading to increased environmental issues.
“Everyone must become environmentalists. From lawmakers to ordinary citizens, everyone must respect the law. The ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme must delve deeper, addressing not just the external environment but also the aspirations and attitudes of the people. Public servants, for example, are bound by their duties under the State emblem, with the Dharmachakra symbolising moral conduct. Neglecting one’s duties during work hours is also a form of theft,” the Thera remarked.
He concluded by stressing the need for a mindset shift where citizens prioritise the country, their profession, their family, and themselves in that order.”Currently, this order is reversed. If we change our approach, we can achieve progress. Through the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, we must cleanse all aspects of our society,” the Thera added.
