The Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya (New Rice Festival), which is one of the four major festivals held annually at the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, was held yesterday morning at the Dalada Maligawa premises following ancient rituals.
It was held under the guidance of the Thera who leads the Thewawa, Chief Incumbent of Mahiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya Ven. Urulawatte Dhammarakkhita Thera and with the participation of Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela.
The first of the four great annual festivals is the New Rice Festival every year, where the first harvest from the fields belonging to the Dalada Maligawa is brought and offered to the Temple of the Tooth.
Celebrating the New Rice Festival every year on January full moon day is a tradition that has been held since the days of ancient kings. The four major festivals which begin with the New Rice Festival include the New Year Festival, the Esala Perahera Festival and the Kartika Festival.
Buddha pooja cooked with fresh rice, is offered to the Sacred Tooth Relic under the initiative of the Thera who leads theThewawa, with the participation of the Diyawadana Nilame.
