Local poultry industrialists say that the industry can provide the country with an annual income of US$ 3.5 million.
They expressed these views when they met Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
They stated that at present, in order to increase the production capacities related to the local poultry industry, the chicks are being multiplied monthly in the farms, and at the same time, they are improving the necessary facilities for breeding chickens and keeping eggs using new technology. From January to May, the number of chicks has increased monthly. Accordingly, the chicken capacity of the farms has been increased to 550,000 chicks in January, 280,000 in February, 490,000 in March, 509,000 in April and 580,000 in May and now the number of chicks in all the farms is up to 3,420,000.
There is also a high demand for domestic poultry and eggs and other poultry-related products in the international market. The most popular sausages in many countries like India and Maldives are the sausages produced in Sri Lanka. Also, a large number of tourists in the Maldives are very interested in consuming Sri Lankan chicken and sausages. Two containers of chicken each month are exported from this country to Maldives.
