Another man involved in Ella train ticket scam arrested

A person who tried to sell two third class tickets worth Rs.5,500 from Kandy to Ella for Rs.27,000 to two female foreign tourists arrested by the Kandy Police Crime Division following information given by State Intelligence officers yesterday (26).

Police said that the suspect was arrested while trying to sell the tickets to two British women at the Peradeniya railway station.

One woman was going to buy a ticket worth Rs.2,500 from Kandy to Ella and another woman bought a ticket worth Rs.3,000 from Kandy to Badulla for Rs.27,000.

It has been revealed through police investigation that the tickets in question were released on the internet on December 27 and within 40 seconds, they were purchased producing identity card numbers of two women in Mavilmada and Nuwara Eliya areas.

Police have started further investigation based on the information that an official of the Kandy railway station is also involved in this railway ticket racket.

The two tourists had thanked the police after they were explained the real price of the tickets and the attempt to dupe them.

Police later had discussed with the officers of the railway department and allotted the two seats for the two tickets to the two women tourists to go to Ella and Badulla.

Police investigations have revealed that the 31-year-old suspect, a resident of Kadugannawa is an associate of the owner of a travel agency in Katugastota area and the said owner had given the ticket to the suspect for sale.

The suspect had told the police that he gets Rs.2000 for selling a ticket in this manner.

On the instructions of Kandy Division SSP Anuruddha Bandaranayake, a team including Divisional Crime Investigation Division OIC Chief Inspector Tilak Samaranayake is investigating the incident.
