Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana yesterday said that nursing is an excellant profession and no complaints about bribery, corruption, fraud or irregularities have been received so far.

The Minister made this observation while speaking at the appointment letters awarding ceremony for 2,519 newly recruited nurses held yesterday at Temple Trees under the patronage of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

Minister Pathirana said that this opportunity of recruiting a huge number of people to the public service in Sri Lanka at a time of economic difficulty can be described as a special sign and that all the governments that have existed in the country since Independence have worked for two special areas, free education and free health. A huge investment has been made and therefore free education and free health can be considered as the two crowns received after the battle for independence.

In 1948, there were about 300 nurses, which started with 400 doctors, including registered doctors. By 75 years, the health sector in Sri Lanka has grown to over 100,000 people, including 43,000 nurses, 23,000 medical officers and 8,000 paramedics. It has become a professional service that provides excellent services and with its evolution, today Sri Lanka is often referred to by the World Health Organization as a center that provides the best quality health services in the world at a low cost. He emphasized that everyone should be entitled to the health support of the service and the health staff and that dignity and pride is great.
