Gamini Jayawickrama Perera

The demise of veteran politicians such as former Cabinet Minister Gamini Jayawickama Perera who utilized all their powers and capabilities for the sake of the country, is a grave loss to the country, said North-Western Province (NWP) Governor Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena.

Issuing a condolence message on the demise of the late Gamini Jayawickama Perera, the Governor said the service rendered to the nation and Buddhism by Perera during his political career from the late 60s until his death, is immense and remarkable.

Perera was elected to the Hamangalla Village Council representing the United National Party (UNP) in 1968 and to Parliament through the first ever Parliamentary election in 1977. He was appointed District Minister of Kurunegala and also the Organiser forthe Katugampola Electorate by late President J.R. Jayawardena, taking into consideration the organising skills and the vision of this young politician.

Since then, he has held numerous key positions such as NWP Chief Minister and several Cabinet Ministerial positions.

He, as Chief Minister, is the pioneer of establishing several statutory institutions running under the NWP Council such as the Provincial Environment Authority, Provincial Development Authority, Wayamba Janakala Foundation and Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority.

He also gifted Kurunegala District the Makandura Industrial Zone, Heraliyawala Industrial Zone, leading garment factories and also the Wickramasila National School in Giriulla.

Gamini Jayawickama Perera is also an exemplary politician who never left his original political party, the UNP.

He was also a social service activist and worked with the Sarvodaya movement since 1966.
