Arjuna speaks on Asia Cup Final at book launch

“I have a few questions about the recently concluded Asia Cup, but don’t blame the players or skipper of the Sri Lanka team”, said former Sri Lanka Skipper and present National Sports Council Chairman Arjuna Ranatunga.

This was pointed out by World Cup-winning skipper Ranatunga at the veteran Journalist Sarath Jayasinghe’s ‘Great Innings of Great Cricketers’ book launch held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium yesterday.

“We saw the ACC Chairman handing over 50,000 US dollars to ground staff. We know the ground staff did a superb job and they never received this type of reward from the organisers. From those days our ground staff have done outstanding work with their adaptability and quick thinking. They never receive any financial support. We saw the Man of the Match, Mohammed Siraj also donating his cheque to them which is rare to see”, said Arjuna.

“Not only this but also we saw during the Asia Cup that the laws of the tournament suddenly changed and introduced a reserve day for India and Pakistan Super Four match. This has never occurred in tournaments before. Today none of the former cricketers have spoken on this matter and I must point out this unfair incident”, said Arjuna.

“Today the media has to take a bigger responsibility but due to some reasons, they failed to point out the errors of these incidents. The cricket Audit report was handed over to Parliament and that’s a good sign to see the Sports Minister trying to end all corruption, especially at Sri Lanka Cricket”, concluded Arjuna Ranatunga.
