Arrested for obstructing duties of MC officers and Police

The Maharagama Police said that the owner of a two-storied house on Janatha Mawatha, Pathiragoda, Maharagama was arrested yesterday for obstructing the duties of Maharagama Municipal Council officers and Police officers who went to collect the unpaid assessment tax money and berating them in foul language.

Police said that the arrested person is a 45-year-old businessman residing at Janatha Mawatha, Pathiragoda, Maharagama.

An amount of Rs. 14,572.58 owed to the Municipal Council from a two-storey house belonging to this person had been defaulted for six years. A Red Notice was issued in this regard 14 days ago and since the owner did not respond to it, the Revenue Inspector of the Maharagama Municipal Council Chamila Prabhashini, property prohibition officers and a police officer had visited the house.

While the owner of the house was explaining the facts regarding the non-payment of taxes due, he had got involved in an argument with the officials and obstructed their duties.

At that time, this person had continued to interfere with the officers’ duties and threatened to attack them and insulted them.

Due to this, the officers were prevented from performing their duties and lodged a complaint at the Maharagama Police, who arrested the suspect yesterday(20).

The suspect was scheduled to be produced at the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday under charges of obstructing the duties of public officials and threatening them in foul language.

Investigations are being conducted on the instructions of Chief Inspector Chelaka Rajapaksa, Officer-In-Charge of the Maharagama Police Station.
