ASG Sumathi appointed ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit Chair

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has appointed Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sumathi Dharmawardena, PC as the new Independent Chair of Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of ICC.

Dharmawardena is a lawyer with over 30 years of experience in legal and regulatory affairs and had made a monumental contribution to curb corruption in sporting arena in Sri Lanka.

Dharmawardena PC played a pivotal role in drafting the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act No. 24 of 2019 to deal with match fixing in Sri Lanka; keeping in line with United Nation Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

Match-fixing seriously damages the very social fabric, which knitted the game of cricket with sportsmen, sports administrators, persons connected to cricket and specially the sponsors and spectators. Thus, Sri Lanka took a lead role by not only enacting a new law but investigated number of corruptions in cricket related matters and had filed number of indictments before High Courts in Sri Lanka. Sumathi Dharmawardena, PC was invited by UNODC and INTERPOL to share his knowledge in combatting corruption in sports in 2023 and 2024. As the Chairman to ACU of ICC, he will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Terms of Reference of the ACU and for providing strategic guidance to the ICC Board on matters relating to anti-corruption and to the ACU in the execution of its duties.
