Attendant gets 20 years’ RI, fine for murder attempt

An attendant who tried to kill a doctor, his wife and two children by mixing poison into the water tank of the official residence of the Chief Medical Officer of the Sevanagala Hospital, 11 years ago, was sentenced to 20 years Rigorous Imprisonment by the Embilipitiya High Court Judge Buddhika Sri Ragala yesterday. A Rs.20,000 fine was also imposed.

The prison sentence was imposed on Nammuni Arachchige Nimal Ranjith (53), a resident of Sevanagala, who had worked as an attendant at the Sevanagala Hospital at that time. The doctor who was remanded was exonerated and acquitted due to no evidence being presented against him.

Charminda Vithanage who served as the Chief Medical Officer of the Sevanagala Rural Hospital had submitted a complaint to the Sevanagala Police that someone had poisoned the water tank at his official residence and tried to kill him and his family members.

Sevanagala Police, who conducted an investigation, had arrested Nimal Ranjith, an attendant who worked at the Sevanagala Hospital, and another doctor from the same hospital as suspects in the incident and produced them before the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court.
