Samagi Jana Balawegaya National Organizer, MP Tissa Attanayake said that the Opposition decided to withdraw from the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) appointed by the Speaker and appoint a separate committee to find out the reason for the bankruptcy of the country.
The MP said that the Opposition will inform the people about the committee which will be appointed for this purpose and that a system will be prepared to enable any local or foreign person to present information in writing or orally. The MP mentioned this while attending the press conference held at the Opposition Leader’s office on Tuesday (11).
Attanayake said the Speaker has issued an announcement to appoint a parliamentary committee in accordance with the request made by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and a number of opposition MPs to appoint a special selection committee to look into the country’s bankruptcy and economic collapse.
He said the Opposition MPs group including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya had made the request to appoint a special select committee, but they were totally disappointed by the responses given by the Speaker instead.
The MP also said that the Opposition demanded the appointment of a special committee to find out the cause of the country’s bankruptcy and economic collapse and report to the Parliament on the relevant persons involved. He said that they would have been satisfied if a committee consisting of independent MPs in Parliament or members of political parties who were not politically accused of corruption had been appointed.
“There is no way to accept the PSC appointed by the Speaker without any kind of consultation and the Opposition demanded the basic requirement to investigate the money and property stolen from this country and to investigate the causes for bankruptcy of the country and reveal to the country who is responsible for it.
“It is needless to say that the collapse of the country took place under Pohottuwa’s rule and the Speaker has done a shameless thing by appointing a member of the political group that bankrupted the country as Chairman of this PSC and appointing a number of SLPP members who represent the government as its members.
He emphasized that the executive council of the Opposition under the initiative of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa decided to completely reject the committee appointed by the Speaker and withdrew from it as the committee cannot be expected to do any kind of justice or work transparently.
